Geneva marks the first in-the-flesh appearance for the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer, the brand’s first front-drive car that doesn’t wear a MINI badge. It’s honestly not a bad idea.

Two-series?
Let’s just murky up the water a little more here, BMW.
Looks like a Polo for an overpaid dental hygienist.
That just looks sad to me. One day, I’ll grow up and be a big boy like the rest!!
2 series Active Tourer as opposed to the 2 series coupe. Oh, I get it….no. I don’t understand why BMW’s first fwd BMW is a small minivan. At least Mercedes had the sense to make it a 4 door sedan that LOOKED like a Mercedes, complete with an AMG model.
Well, Mercedes-Benz had the A-class first and Audi had the A3 hatch, so it’s in line with that trend.
Also, Audi was always fwd. This was the first post-war Audi, the Audi 72:

It’s essentially a DKW F102 with a 4 stroke engine and fwd. Until the Quattro came along, all Audis were fwd.
Why does BMW’s first fwd BMW look like a small minivan? Because in Europe that’s an extremely popular format, and BMW had to decide whether to play or pass. European driving conditions favour family capacity in a small road footprint, so what you get is shorter and narrower, but taller. Space efficiency in this size in turn dictates FWD.
This may not fit your idea of a BMW, and as an E36 M3, E39 5-series and Mini Cooper S owner it doesn’t much fit mine either, but it’s logical enough.
This has been coming for a long time now.
Also, it looks like a Kia Rondo (not for sale here in ‘Murcia).
The prior one was.
And also we have the Forte hatchback, so it kind of is.
The car looks great, but I see no reason to pay BMW premium for it. It’s only my own choice, of course.
It’s a Rondo for people who don’t use turn signals.
I’m sad. All over europe were 1 class cars, with five doors. Rear driven 1 class cars.
FWD is Mini. Mini is cool.
RWD is BMW. Clearly I’m old, and remember “real” BMWs.
Oh, well.
The Renault Twingo gives me hope.
was there a limit to pictures taken? I mean…no back seat or cargo area shots…????
Looks like it was sketched on a napkin by a BMW designer during their coffee break. Hideous and a total lack of effort.
In my youth, I woke up at nights thinking that one day I would haul around my children in an aspirational brand. And that vehicle was a pint-sized minivan with a Roundel on the grille-like structure on the front.
Okay. I admit. I am lying.
Gosh, I’ve never seen *that* interior design before! :snooze:
For BMW’s Geneva showing of their Two-Series, they chose tan over tan…?
Hmmm. I didnt know there was still an interest in tan/tan.
A metallic brown would have been more upscale here, in my humble opinion.
Maybe BMW is hinting that this is their beigemobile.
This looks like a Peugeot 307 from ten years ago, with the bmw grille grafted on… same quarter lights, a pillar base, screen angle and bonnet shape at the front. Lazy and ugly. And I drive a 1 series e87…
Am I the only that sees a really premium Rondo or C-Max?
Bring it. I do wish the exterior were a touch more aggressive, but that interior quality can’t be had anywhere in this vehicle class.
I know that even the luxury marques have to chase volume but this is just sad.
Is it just me, or has the interior of most BMW’s looked the same since 04?
I’m pretty sure the answer to this question is “B-Class,” but welcome to the party, BMW.
Is this going to be sold in the US? “What I really want is a small, front-drive BMW that looks kind of like a minivan,” said no American, ever. But who knows? I would never have expected the Buick Encore to sell well, and it does, although it has a touch more CUV in the styling and is available in AWD.
I like the little BMW a lot. There are SO few truly premium hatchbacks that urban families would enjoy. I don’t mean to sound snobby, but if you have real money the Encore and C-Max aren’t enough to really satisfy. You might think the 5-series wagon is the answer but this car has real packaging advantages.
Active Tourer? Active Turd is more like it!
