The inaugural season of the “World Racing League”, and the final season of operations at soon-to-be-McMansion-ized Texas World Speedway, experienced a little celebrity excitement Saturday evening when our own Sajeev Mehta took the checkered flag in an AMC-liveried Thunderbird.
Jeeves himself will be writing up the race weekend for your consumption in the near future, but as his editor and teammate I feel compelled to call him out for his solid work in support of the team. We had two mechanicals and one wreck this weekend, meaning that of our four chances to see a checkered flag (two cars, two days) only one flag was actually seen, and that was thanks to our man from the Cherokee nation the town in Texas where he was actually born and raised India. It’s tough work driving a difficult car in ninety-degree weather for any period of time and he did it exceptionally well. I leave you with this quote:
“Correr, competir, eu levo isso no meu sangue. É parte de mim. É parte da minha vida.” — Sajeev Mehta

And he speaks Portuguese! I tell you, this site is full of Renaissance men. (And women.)
Now I want a rocket popsicle.
Did he share the magnum of GH Mumm with you guys before helicoptering off to his private jet?
Sajeev Metha da Silva – he’s probably from Goa or some other Portuguese trading post in India.
Then his surname would have to be “De Sousa” or “Fernandes”
That body style Thunderbird on a banked oval reminds me of The Fastest Chicken in the South.
Well done fellas.
Tremendous! I can’t wait to read the details.
Don’t really care much about the article. Only reason I’m posting is because of the picture. My first car was a black Fox-bodied ’86 T-Bird Turbo Coupe with bordello red velour seats.
Man, I still love that fekkin car.
When you guys are done racing it, someone ought to remove all those silly decals and give it a respectable paint job. This thing really deserves to be driven on actual streets. I see so few of them these days. Damn shame…
You had me at “AMC-liveried Thunderbird.”
I got to cut my teeth wheel to wheel racing with a couple of my favorite writers, and race against and hang out with my brother. Good times. The thunderbird makes you feel like god damn bill Elliot when it’s screaming on the high banking and then cackling as you let off turning on to the road course. Sorry dad.
Oh yeah. And a C4 corvette dominated day 2, which made me happy.
Congratulations Sajeev!
Horray for Sajeev and Fox body Fords!!! (See Sanjeev, I told you he would win.)
“It’s tough work driving a difficult car in ninety-degree weather for any period of time and he did it exceptionally well.”
I would like to know more about the car. I assume that it has more in common with a production T-bird than a NASCAR T-bird of the same period. What’s it like to drive it? That would be an interesting capsule review. :)
Congrats, Jeeves!
