A Japanese motorist has spotted what appears to be the next-generation Mazda MX-5 while out testing in Japan.
The next-generation car has a rear deck reminiscent of the first-generation BMW Z4, as well as the second-gen NB Miata, along with the flared arches of the current MX-5. TTAC will be attending the launch of the fourth-generation car next month, but until then, this is all we’ve got.

meh
Come on BTSR, let’s hold off judgment until we have more info. Maybe, through Mazda’s partnership with Fiat, it will offer a motha-F*ckin HEMI!!! with two superchargers and NOS!
Personally I am hoping for more headroom. I can’t really knock the limited headroom in the NC when headroom sucks in much larger cars. But that is the reason I got rid of mine.
HEMI!? I’d be giddy for a Miata with the 500 Abarth motor, tuned to about 200 hp, mainly for its pornographic soundtrack.
I’d be happy if they just made the 2.5 motor an option. Probably an easy swap and wouldn’t alter the balance much, if at all.
Probably won’t fit your modest frame anyway.
How about a Mazda 6 coupe?
I’d like that.
Or a Fusion Coupe with a 3.5-L ecoboost AWD.
How about a Fusion coupe with a 5.0 V8 and RWD. You can actually get that. I bet the 3.5 ecoboost (as opposed to the 2.3 that is already offered) will come later in some variant.
I hope all that rear positive camber will be left out of the production model.
(I know, I know… don’t flame me, bro!)
I’m not seeing an abnormal amount of camber there, and if anything it’s slightly negative, like it should be on anything that isn’t the front end of a 1920s Bugatti.
I was jokingly referring to the skewed camera shot (ala the glass seam) in the lead photo.
disappointing photo work–definitely needed to get a view of the front

NA, NB, NC… ND. The upcoming launch will be the for the *fourth-generation* car, will it not?
Yeah, although NA –> NB was more of a heavy refresh than a new model.
Nah, NB qualifies as a different gen. There aren’t many things that will bolt on from NA to NB.
I don’t dispute that they are separate generations, but a quick list off the top of my head of things that will bolt right on:
Engine
Transmission
Spring/shock assemblies
Wishbones
Differential
Drive shaft
Seats
Soft top
(Optional) hard top
Brakes
Vent windows
Definitely the real deal though. A Hiroshima-plated car, and a very interesting drop off at the nose.
Great catch there, juicy sushi. Hiroshima plates.
Can you tell from the pic how much the car weighs? I’ll be as interested in the total weight and its distribution as I will be in the exterior looks.
Looks like it needs a bit more in the curves department. To me it looks very roundy and 90s.
Please, oh please, don’t let them “bangle” the Miata.
I see it too brother. The first impression I get from the lead photo is “why is that Z4 in camo tape?”
That camo makes it look like a sad catfish mouth
+1, ApaGttH. My first thought on seeing the pic was, “Why is that car so unhappy? Not having fun in testing?”
Reserving judgement until we get a better look, but so far it reminds me of the most pointless car in the world, a post 1st-gen Eclipse.
The height of the rear window compared to height of the bottom makes me sad. Fingers still crossed.
Rear deck reminds me a little of the FD RX-7.
A hint of 3rd gen Rx-7 going on around those tail-lights. If the current and previous editions were “Chic cars” then those chics knew a good thing. Drove my first Miata this summer. It was definitely a beater, but man they designed a sweet chassis. If you want to create car enthusiasts, just put them in a MIata/MX-5.
One of these days I’m going to get some of that black & white wrap and put it on my cars, my motorcycle, my scooter, and even my lawn mower. Think of the fun that’ll be, having the shooters from “Lawnmowerspycams.com” following me as I go up and down and up and down and back and forth and back and forth on my lawn.
+1
Shooting brake time!!! make it so
Oh how I wish. Plus slap a turbo on it. I know the purist don’t agree with going FI, but my ’96 Eclipse GS-T was such a hoot when on boost. Just not a fan of soft tops: too squishy, too noisy.
New MX-5… looks like it fell right under the tree.
Only thing I wish for, is less weight, same power or base Eco/Hi-mpg engine and an optional engine of the same Hp as the current ‘NC’.
Will be seeing it for real in about a month at ‘Miatas at MRLS’.
