Volkswagen CEO Michael Horn announced Monday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit that 265,000 TDI owners have opted to take advantage of the company’s Goodwill Package.
The package, which includes a $500 gift card and $500 Volkswagen dealer card, has also been extended to owners of Touareg TDI models.
The announcement comes after Volkswagen revealed a new plug-in hybrid concept based on the Tiguan. The company may also use a new catalytic convertor to fix some 400,000 of nearly 600,000 total illegally polluting diesels in the United States.
The catalytic convertor leaves a disparity in the total numbers and those they may fix. That disparity could include a number of vehicles Volkswagen could eventually buy back from customers.

The other day, I was at the gas (I mean, diesel) station filling up, and there was a couple at the next stall with a Mk.6 Golf TDI in front of me with an Ohio plate on it. They didn’t seem to know anything about the Goodwill Package, and they were glad I told them about it once we started talking. They didn’t like the car, so it’s a good thing they can get a little something out of it.
Mind boggling that people that actually own them have no clue, so good job on helping them. Any idea why they didn’t like it?
They said it had given them all kinds of mechanical trouble, including the need for a replacement transmission.
I submitted my registration on 11/14 and still haven’t received anything yet (other than confirmation email.) Suppose I should call VW to see what’s going on, but my guess is that this is due to the meth heads who go mailbox to mailbox grabbing the contents.
I’d call VW Customer care. I registered for mine on November 9th and got it on December 16. You’re way overdue. Hope the meth heads enjoy their cards that they can’t use.
Thanks, I just called VW customer care and they are sending another package. The customer service rep was helpful. Like you said… without the car, they can’t activate the cards…
Did I miss some news that made everyone comfortable with taking the plan? IE, no longer worried about screwing themselves out of future litigation.
My lawyers (Salsbury, Clements of Baltimore) said: “We have confirmed that Volkswagen has entered into a stipulation in a pending court case in Michigan in which it has stated that it does not, and will not in the future, contend that accepting the “Goodwill Package” waives or releases any rights you may have with respect to the class action we have filed on your behalf. Volkswagen has agreed that this stipulation applies to all pending cases arising out of the TDI litigation and applies to the Audi A3 2.0L TDI diesel engine vehicles as well as the Volkswagens.”
VW sent my package quickly. I got letters from VW as well. The $500 gift card is good for a year, and I’m going to buy tires for my other car with the $500 VW dealer credit.
No complaints…and if I
never went on line or cared, I still would have had two old school snail letters….so if you are the first buyer, you are notified.
