If you missed your chance getting into a limited edition Ford GT supercar last week, your EcoBoost-powered dreams might not be over.
Dave Pericak, director of Global Ford Performance, recently told Autocar that the 600-plus horsepower heart of the GT could beat on — in other low-volume specialty models.
Pericak was talking about the racing circuit prowess of the twin turbocharged and intercooled 3.5-liter V6, and hinted that it would make a good mill for a small firm to use in a sports or supercar, not just the GT.
Ford’s win at the 2014 12 Hours of Sebring “shows how capable the engine is,” Pericak told Autocar, adding that he’s considered making it available to other racing teams.
If the automaker decides to offer up its beastliest engine, it would directly challenge rival General Motors, which sells its LS small-block V8s without a body.
Ford’s one-month order window for the 2017 and 2018 model year GTs saw 6,506 applications roll in, meaning plenty of disappointment for wannabe owners. Ontario firm Multimatic plans to make just 250 units of the roughly $450,000 vehicle each year, meaning over 6,000 GT fans will spend the next two years aimlessly tinkering in their garage, waiting for their next chance.
Now, Pericak’s comments opens the door to the possibility of GT performance being offered in a much cheaper vehicle. For now, that should keep the fires stoked inside crestfallen Ford aficionados.

“Dave Pericak, director of Global Ford Performance, recently told Autocar that the 600-plus horsepower heart of the GT could beat on — in other low-volume specialty models.”
OK, but really, the Ford director of global performance said other Ford’s might use the engine (or some variant)? I wouldn’t expect him to say anything less and certainly not to say anything that would imply it wasn’t anything but a fantastic engine.
Probably another Mustang SE or perhaps a,more powerful Raptor. Hopefully this isn’t hinting at a 3.5 EB GT500. Talk about being emasculated!
Also I doubt very seriously this engine is going to topple the LS/LT engines as America’s performance sweetheart. Ford’s multivalve and multicam engines are simply too expensive to get the sort of gains you get from the LS/LT engines plus the packaging and weight advantages you get with them overall at that price.
Add to this absolutely huge aftermarket support and a relatively easy engine to wrench on.
I can’t remember the online magazine where they pitched a GM LS V8 against Ford’s Coyote but the LS blew well past the Coyote at the same price point, so much so the Ford side of the article has yet to be printed.
You absolutely hit the nail on the head. In the power for pennies game, the LS engines seem to be nearly an order of magnitude cheaper than everything else. Especially when you think of all the great plug and play support. You don’t have to do a custom wiring job on an LS, unlike an RB26DETT or something.
And that’s not even considering the big blocks, my old mechanic had an 80s Buick with a big block, a t4, a cam, and a 3400 rpm stall converter that was ludicrous. I think he said he did the entire build in a month with minimal help and he never opened the engine. Just added an aftermarket, self-tuning ECU and bought some headers, a chinese turbo, a junk yard big block, and a buick with a blown transmission.
The Raptor has no competition, so I can see that angle, but the GT500? A V6TT isn’t happening there, even with 600+ HP. Now an Eco Boost V8 isn’t out of the question.

Lotus Evora.
An Evora 600 – or maybe a tweak of the Factory Five 818. I think Ford has been working with them already on an EcoBoost 4 version of the 818. 600 hp in a sub-2000 lb car would be sweet.
…my brain immediately went there, too: the greatest problem with lotus’ +2 packaging is the dearth of transverse-drivetrain performance motors on the market…never mind that the TRD aurion offered the world’s highest-powered FWD layout at the time; that was ten years ago, expectations have since inflated along with the horsepower wars, and the new GT gearbox may fit the evora’s RMR layout…
Dear Mr. Fields,
I just purchased one of your products — a brand, spankin’ new Ford Fiesta 1.0L EcoBoost. You haven’t heard of it? Don’t worry, you aren’t the only one.
Anyway, it’s a little low on power. I’ve been wanting to tune it, but there’s no support from either Ford Performance or Mountune. All I want is an extra 20 lbs-ft or more torque. That’s it.
But, hey, if you’re going to sell this to people in a crate, I’ll take this instead.
Cheers,
The Internet
Wont waste my time.
Fiesta ~ 34MPG in 500 miles all over Mich on sales calls.
A Chrysler 300 ~ 30 MPG the following week in IND.
Cram my 6’3″ frame in the tiny Fiesta? NO! Never again. I dont care about FiST. I can live without it. (former Civic Si and Sentra SE-R Owner here. Huge inside compared to FiST)
Shhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!
That’s CRAZY talk on TTAC!
A far bigger, far more powerful vehicle and motor, geared properly, getting close to the same fuel economy as a tiny, motorized mailbox, with 3 cylinders!!!???
NEVER!!!!
There isn’t a COBB kit?
Nope.
“it would directly challenge rival General Motors, which sells its LS small-block V8s without a body.”
LS9 in a crate (638 hp) is $20,199.
Interesting to see how this V6 compares on price.
Can you still buy a LS7? My dream C3 project requires one.
http://m.chevrolet.com/performance/overview.html#.Vzzpdsj3anM
LS7 still available, GM does a great job with the engines and transmissions choices on their site.
Yep. This. A $450k car so how much would they charge for the motor? $50k?
Forget that. Why go with the complexity of a turbo V6 with unknown transmission choices when you can get a $10k E-Rod.
Hell, crate is one option. You can build a LSX motor that would exceed crate specs.
But…but….it’s a really over-compressed 3.5 liter “ecoboost” motor (you know, the same modular motor used in the Taurus, F150, etc.), and it rests in a very generic looking “supercar” shell built by Canadian exotic vehicle master ‘Multimatic.’
And 6,500 people sent in audition tapes crying and begging to pay way more for one of 500 Ford GTs with a 3.5 liter ecoboost in a Symptomatic (of Ontario, Canada, nowhere near Modena, Italy) body than much better Ferraris, Lamborghinis, McLarens, etc., so it must be AHMAAAZIING
Could make a neat coffee table, I guess.

One of the biggest PR stunts (borderline scams) in Ford’s history.
Now, they hit up their friends in the media to have them spread the word that “Ford had over 6,000 applications and interviews begging Ford to sell one of only 500 Ford GTs to them for over $400,000!!!”
The Ford GT is soooo awesome!!!!!!!!!
GO EXTRA-SUPER-DUPER-BLOWN 3.5 LITER ECOBOOST!!!!!
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYY!!!!!
Glad you added the words “Ford History” I still think that overall the Tesla 3 is the Largest scam ever..This is from a person that kinda likes the Original.
Soooo, you’re not a fan?
The jealousy is strong with DeadBrain.
1998OvoidTaurusIsTheBestCarEver – Maybe Ford can get Multimatic to bore, stroke & FI a 3.0 liter Vulcan V6, historically excellent motor that it is!
>>One of the biggest PR stunts (borderline scams) in Ford’s history.<<
Well, so many languished on the lots last time Ford knew they needed a stunt this time.
>>Ontario firm Multimatic plans to make just 250 units of the roughly $450,000 vehicle each year<<
So let's call it the Multimatic GT. Nice to know the Acura NSX was designed in and will be built in the USA.
Man, that would make for one raucous MKZ. Or MKC! The mind reels from the possibilities.
In the Toronto area, one garage drops LS engines in Miatas and another has developed a mating kit to drop an GM Ecotec engine in a Miata so why not this one too? After all Miata is always the answer!
When I read the headline, “Ford GT Engine Could Be Made Available, Minus the GT”, I assumed you meant a crate motor. I could still see this happening.
Crate motors are great! This and all iterations of EB 3.5 should be available as such.
Hello power plant for the Lincoln Mark IX!!! :D
Maybe hack/stuff it in oldie-but-goldy Honda NSX.
Just what I’d want to hear after shellng out 400k for a Ford supercar……
Ford might be giving Cadihack an out – since everything but the engine on their products is third rate and not luxurious, potentially they should just sell engines. At least those are competent even if the rest of the car is overpriced garbage.
Directed at all the clowns at GMI.
How about not “engine minus GT”, but “Ford GT minus tripple-double-turbo-Ecoboost” option ?
They can play with that “PR-marketing crap” for racing purpose only and put sth with more traditional V8 motor on the road ..
They would need big, powerful 650+bhp V8 for new GT500 anyway , so what’s the problem to pump-it-up to(or above) Hellcat-level and create proper successor for previous generation “cool” Ford GT ..
…
This “talent show applications” also seems rather ridiculous ..
.. than you know that not experts and engineers, but “PR-marketing muppets” are running the show .. >)
