Keyboard Warriors

Attention keyboard warriors: your moderators have been selected.

Hit the jump to find out who they are and what they’ll be doing. Go on now.

First, I want to say thank you to the many people who volunteered themselves to be moderators for the community. Almost all of you were deserving of the honor considering your histories of being TTAC’s most level-headed commenters.

However, when these two people volunteered, the decision was easy.

Without further ado, your new moderators are Kyree Williams and Adam Tonge (formerly bball40dtw). Starting today, these two thick-skinned people, in addition to the normal TTAC staff, will be keeping an eye on the conversation.

Now, before you say TTAC is going down the road of censorship and thus killing the community, there’s something you should know.

Unbeknownst to some of you, TTAC’s comments have always been moderated, but we’ve just not discussed it openly. Users receive emails from time to time, and sometimes bans are handed out (though rarely). Even with that moderation, there’s been no complaints about TTAC acting with a heavy hand. So, there you go.

In the future, this light-handed approach to comment moderation will continue. I’m not wanting to take away your opportunity to oppose writers and other commenters in lively debate. However, the ad hominem attacks and personal insults must come to an end. You are dubbed the Best and Brightest for a reason, and these changes are merely aimed at ensuring that label continues to hold true.

The moderators’ main job will be to keep an eye out for infractions in line with our current commenting policy, until such time that TTAC’s commenting policy changes (which will happen soon). It will not be the responsibility of moderators to remove commenting privileges. That responsibility will still fall on me, and me alone.

That said, please welcome TTAC’s new moderation team, and thank you to Kyree and Adam for stepping up to take on what will surely be a thankless job.

I always state this for some reason when issues like this come up: I’ve been reading this site for nearly 10 years now (’06-7?) I’ve seen all the leadership changes throughout the years. I think the current leadership and staff is the strongest ever.

And I think these two moderators are great choices.

If you had asked me which two commenters should be moderators, those are the ones I would have picked. Thanks for stepping up, guys.

For starters, I assume that George Carlin’s seven words are out of the question. :)

    Congratulations and welcome aboard.

Almost forgot- there’s a typo in the fifth paragraph (your/you’re).

    Mr. Stevenson…

I am confused…in the previous piece, you implied that TTAC was not moderated…and that TTAC wanted to put moderating in place. Also that, sanctioning the party most agree was at fault in the egregious commentary on BarkM’s piece last week would be like punishing someone by retroactively creating a law to make what they did illegal.

Now you are telling us that moderation was in place last week? Which means that what that encroaching party wrote must have been, in the view of the moderators on-duty last week, defacto deemed acceptable in the view of the on-duty moderators last week?

Just for clarity…if moderating was in place last week, why wasn’t the offensive party’s comments….um…..moderated before they got out of hand?

Inquiring B&B members want to know….

Thanks, in advance, for clearing it up…

    • 0 avatar

Let me clear up the confusion.

There is a blacklist that enforces certain policies. For instance, if a certain user is blacklisted, they cannot comment.

There’s also a “dirty words” list that, if triggered, sends a comment into the moderation queue. I usually allow a lot of those comments because we’re all adults and sometimes the F-word really drives a point home.

However, there has not been active moderation as of late when it comes to filtering the interactions between commenters. So, if you and another commenter are having it out in a way that wasn’t necessarily cordial, but also didn’t feature any dirty words, it would not come to my attention unless 1) I personally read that comment thread, or 2) someone notified me that something was going on.

With regards to the DeadWeight issue, I only chose to ban him when he came into the second post and decided to go off again on Mark. DW needed to cool it. He’s been unbanned since then. Whether he comes back or not will be up to him. I didn’t want to ban him for the first infraction because we’ve been fairly lax at enforcing the rules we already have. From now on, thanks to Kyree and Adam stepping up, we should be able to enforce the rules in a more consistent manner.

So, think of the newly minted moderators as people who will be able to keep an eye on the conversation more than me. When they see something, they’ll let me know.

eggsalad – I imagine BTSR, head in hands and feeling the sting of rejection, wondering why his letter of interest to Mark Stevenson didn’t garner a moderator job. He *was* the obvious choice, his alacrity with Page Refresh, his HELLCAT insights, his ability to boil any discussion on cars down to a polarizing, alienating political all-caps screed.
      I’m mystified too.

“The Best and Brightest” is not a compliment. Those guys killed 58000 Americans and 2-3 million Vietnamese. I suppose you could let them skate on the 2 million who died in The Killing Fields since that was mostly due to Communism and happened after the results of the policies that the “Best and Brightest” put in place had run their course.

    • 0 avatar

One quick Google search is enough to know that the phrase has been re-purposed substantially and is now used in any number of situations from educational honors, business accomplishment, and journalistic excellence.

I had no idea that the term had been used pejoratively and was not aware of the book (hence the Google search), because even though I’m interested in history I wouldn’t call myself well-read by any stretch.

      • 0 avatar
        JimC2

@Detroit- I think “Best and Brightest” came after the fact, “Whiz Kids” was a more contemporary term, although both phrases predate the Vietnam War and have been used for quite a lot of things.

Anyway, to appropriate someone else’s historic quote, I predict the next TTAC flame war will start over some d— fool thing in Detroit.

Well that explains no DW on the caddy article, I really think this is overkill, yes DW went mental but Bark seems to jump in and defend himself and if TTAc had/ had ghost moderators before is any of this really necessary? That being said good luck guys. Kyree may be busy with VW stuff this week so be nice , if he is a little pre occupied.

I worked here for many months before signing up to be able to comment. When I did so, I read through the rules and FAQ and noticed most of the bad behaviors I’d noticed by commenters were already covered. Eith the addition of these two moderators hopefully you’ll be able to address those breaches with smaller corrective actions on a regular basis rather than having to swing a big bat when things get out of hand.

Congrats to TTAC for taking steps to address the issue, and condolences to Kyree and Adam. Having done a small amount of moderating in the past, I know that no matter how reasonable they are they’re still going to catch &$*# from some people.

Ive been lurking here for, to my reckoning, about 4 years. I finally registered today. To be quite honest, I’m not sure if it was the recent dust up or simply boredom. I’d wanted to post before, but I actually try and steer clear of forums, message boards, etc. for the very reasons that make moderators a necessity.

I love cars, but my technical knowledge and knowledge of the business itself is limited. I’m obsessed with research, though, and discovered this site when I was looking for a new car and wanted reviews beyond what Edmunds and the like had to offer.

Now, this isn’t all particularly relevant to the discussion at hand. But I doubt it would be in most circumstances. I just have liked the site for a long while and thought I’d express my appreciation for the site and for all the commenters who’ve made this site a fount of knowledge. And I consider the comments section a useful extension of that information. I can’t say that about much of the internet.

Anywhere I can go and find a collection of people with knowledge and opinions not limited to make/model/year is a fantastic resource for me. So to make a long story slightly longer…. thanks?

Congrats to bball, um ….. Adam??? (he doesn’t write or act like a Adam) and Kyree.

I do respect bball’s input, I hope he doesn’t hold my views against preaching a his particular manufacturer.

One thing is bball is a automotive enthusiast as is Kyree.

I hope this doesn’t alter my writing style. I do enjoy TTAC.

I also hope TTAC doesn’t become a boring watered down site with over policing.

    • 0 avatar
      Adam Tonge

I’m not going to moderate based on automotive brand. I don’t expect Kyree or I to over police.

Full disclosure: I currently own two Ford products. I do not currently work for any auto manufacturer directly or as a contractor. I have worked as a contractor for all of the Big 3 and many suppliers.

I’ll trade you some good Michigan beer for some Yuengling Light. It’s about the only beer my wife drinks.

          • 0 avatar
            28-Cars-Later

We have to help her. Yuengling Light is barely a step above IC Light, some might argue they are in parity in their watery beer flavored water properties.

I’ve got some AV Winter Lager left at home, would this ring her bell?

          • 0 avatar
            dal20402

Yuengling Lager is cheap watery beer, but it’s cheap watery beer that tastes far better than the national brands of cheap watery beer. I’ll drink it any time, especially for $2 at happy hour.

Never tried the “Light.” I don’t trust light beer in general, ever since a 5’2″, 105# female friend drank me under the table one night in DC by sticking only to light beer while ordering me the good stuff.

          • 0 avatar
            Kenmore

Now I haz it… Yuengling, which I only heard of on this forum, seemed like such a Chinese name for an American brewery.

But I’ll betcha it morphed from Jüngling.

          • 0 avatar
            JohnTaurus_3.0_AX4N

            @ Adam,

Yuengling is what John and I drink at the pub, its a little hole in the wall. We share a pitcher of Yuengling and forget about work/stress/bills for a while. We rarely order a second pitcher, its just right at one usually. Its pretty good and unlike Coors original started to do, it doesn’t give me a headache after two freakin glasses lol.

            Never heard of Yuengling Light.

          • 0 avatar
            CoreyDL

Draft beer is quite likely to give me a headache. Bottled does not do this for some reason.

          • 0 avatar
            56BelAire

Yuengling is a great Pennsylvania beer. Happens to be the oldest brewery in America. Whenever I’m back east I bring 3-4 cases back home to Utah.

There is a great video of the company history on their website…..highly recommended.

Oh, I just went back and read the comments I submitted yesterday (our time) to find one deleted.

Be real about what you delete and read into why the comment was entered. Maybe you should keep an eye on the person on the receiving end, especially when a comment is relevant to the article and the response to a individual.

Come on. Fnck me dead. If moderation is going to occur make it equitable.

    Really????

We haven’t moderated anything yet. It’s very possible your comment got stuck in the WordPress filter, as Mark explained above. He sometimes has to go in and manually pull comments out of that filter. Hopefully the comment system gets updated soon.

        Lou_DC,
As usual I’d expect your trolling comments tagged at the end of most every submission I pass here at TTAC, just like PUTC, hey troll.

Maybe bball can delete the non relevant trolling comments you make.

        Can’t help yourself, can you.

Lou, as I’ve told you in the past, if you want to make a comment at least make it relevant, don’t just go around trolling those you don’t like.

I am going to henceforth refer to you as Troll3. I can think of only two others in the long history of this site that surpass your trolling ability…the long ago departed P71_Silvy and Bill from Buckhead.

You sir are a legend on these hallowed forums and as those 2 have either long ago been banned or gave up I would like to crown you as our number 1 active troll. Your sanctimonious yet passive agressive style ensure your trolling is fresh, yet no less grating than those two. The irony of you complaining about trolling is not lost on me. Again, we salute you and here is hoping that a localized EMP of some sort can one day relegate you to the status of the aforementioned number 1 and 2 trolls.

        Big Al from Oz

        Lou_BC,
If you want to endure a harmonious relationship with me, then have a look at how you troll.

You “ganged” up on Big Trucks, me and a couple others.

        Why, do I ask?

You seem to attempt to follow the B&B. If you consider a person a target by the B&B you will chastise that person.

This is a very weak attribute to have as a human. Become an independent thinker and individual. Try not to think you are appeasing the B&B with your constant childish comments directed at nearly every submission I make, along with your other alter ego, DenverMike.

If this occurs the moderators will find the site easier to manage.

    davefromcalgary

    Good choices.

All, Corey, 28, bball, those who follow the Verano saga… I think the clutch is going.

64000 kms, 50-60% of it highway.

I’m off to cry for a bit.

    • 0 avatar
      Adam Tonge

Much sadness. At least it’s a lease. Look on the bright side. How many more months?

      • 0 avatar
        davefromcalgary

21 months left out of 48 months lease.

I have a 120k kms full new car warranty (roadside, towing, trip cancellation coverage, etc), and onstar calling for that long. We, between being now self employed and using the Hyundai beater for every cent its worth, we have at least brought the Verano down to a decent mileage usage, so I wont get dinged there.

But try and convince GM Canada that the car is faulty and the clutch should be replaced on warranty? Are clutches not considered wear items? I mean, I think my stats (2 year old car with 64000 kms, 35000 of those pure highway) are on my side, but given their “customer service” to date, I think I’m looking straight into a fight.

        • 0 avatar
          Adam Tonge

The clutch is technically a wear item. That being said, a clutch shouldn’t wear out in 64,000 km. I would think that GM would cover it.

          • 0 avatar
            davefromcalgary

Thats my argument. And the car has a known history of bad trans. Heck, I have an work order for when the car was a week old, stating a funny noise. Thats still there. And now the car is juddering in reverse.

Its not the model. Its the transmission. My parents have a 2.0T AWD 6AT Regal and over about 25k kms, the only issue was the door panel was damaged on delivery, replaced on warranty. Also the TPMS on the winter rims they bought were crap, so they just got a new set.

So I feel an AT Verano or an AT Regal would be fine. This MT has been the issue.

I was under the impression there was a MT Regal as well.

I hate to recommend another GM product, but offering instead to buy a Canyon 4×4 would “encourage” them to help you.

I talked to a lady years ago with a Chevy Tracker (it was nearly new) and she was telling me what a pos her previous Malibu was. I asked why another Chevy? She said they knew her and offered more than anyone else would dream about for the ‘Bu. And she chose a Tracker knowing full well it was a thinly disguised Suzuki. The Chevy Prizm was too small to carry her boys in evidently.

John, I’ve thought of this. Just buy a Canyon or a Sierra if they will take care of the lease somehow because I’m still paying them money.

        davefromcalgary

        Fairly intense.

I’m to the point where I am trying to figure out how to get rid of the car without paying a 5 figure penalty and just buying a new crew cab 4×4 Tacoma (since buying used Taco’s is a fools errand).

          28-Cars-Later

I’m not sure how you could this short of insurance fraud (those two words together always make me chuckle since the insurance industry defrauds you on a semi-regular basis year after year but they don’t want it to be a two way street)

I don’t believe there is any way unless GM Canada has a change of heart. In this case their spreadsheet let them down and its costing them more for me to keep the car. Maybe 2 years left and the repairs ARENT STOPPING would convince them to revisit the case?

Its all about the money right?

And what the heck 28? No comments on it not being a GMC? (I kid)

          • 0 avatar
            28-Cars-Later

GM’s never been good with spreadsheets, well at least not in the last thirty five years. You may want to examine the lease contract for riders on early termination but I think you’re cooked. On the plus side much of the car will be brand new at the end of the lease.

I had to chuckle about the Tacoma comment since we both know there will be a GMC in your driveway next… because it’s calling…

Make GM do an AT conversion under warranty – at least the car will be salable after the lease is up.

          I’m not totally kidding.

Excellent choices! Still mad at Kyree for pointing out the steering columns in both my GM trucks aren’t centered with the drivers seat!…LOL – Something I never noticed.

I’m sure you’re not familial, but now I’ve got “Space Dementia” playing in my head.

          “Space Dementia”

          mmmmm,
H8 is the one for me
It gives me all I need
          and helps me co-exist
          With the chill

          You make me sick
          Because I adore you so
I love all the dirty tricks
          And twisted games you play
          On me

Space dementia in your eyes and
          Peace will arise
          And tear us apart
          And make us meaningless again

          Mmmm, yeah
          You’ll make us wanna die
I’d cut your name in my heart
Will destroy this world for you
I know you want me to
          Feel your pain

Space dementia in your eyes and
          Peace will arise
          And tear us apart
          And make us meaningless again

          Ooooh …

Not that there’s anything wrong with that… ;)

Been reading/viewing this site for quite a number of years. And, on an almost daily basis. You may not know me, but I feel like I know most all of you as I have been a lurker for so very long. And, I want you all to know that I like and completely accept each and every one of you as you are. Many of you are wise and knowledgeable, and I’ve truly learned a lot from you. Others are entertaining in your own and unique way. And, I also greatly appreciate and enjoy the not-so-serious banter amongst friends.

I strongly agree with and approve of the way Mark is running things. Do wish it weren’t necessary to implement mods, but I wholeheartedly agree with the choice of Kyree and Adam. You guys are great, and are just what is needed. I want to emphasize that I do consider BTSR and DW as friends and valuable members of the community. I definitely want to continue to hear from them and anybody else who hasn’t been posting much lately. So what I’m saying is that I’d prefer to not having any voices silenced – unless it is deemed absolutely necessary on a temporary basis. I do visit several other auto sites, but being a lifelong car nut, since before I could drive – and actually since I was a little kid over 50 years ago, I truly derive a great deal of enjoyment from this site.

It’s been over 25 years since I last rented a car, so I appreciate all the reviews of car rentals as well as the typical new car test drives. And of different posters’ brief comments about their experiences with various cars and trucks.

While I don’t personally know Jack, I’ll share that I do live in the Columbus/central Ohio area. One of the cars I own which most certainly is not a daily driver, is a 1986 Cimbria SS. Rather that try to tell you about it(a kit car), I’ll suggest you can gain far more info from the ‘net about Cimbrias than I could share briefly. Aside from that I tend to lean toward Mopars as daily drivers, as I grew up in a Mopar-owning household. Having said that, I still have an interest in most all cars, new and old. One of the other sites I frequent is Curbside Classic.

Also wanted to share that around 10-15 years ago I was a regular follower of Jalopnik and Autoblog. But, sadly, they both changed in a major way. Like here I mostly lurked and was an infrequent poster. Was also on Edmunds a lot around 6 to 8 years ago. And what I want you all to know is that each of you contributes to making this a really great car site which I am normally on daily, in as much as time allows. So, carry on. Will do less lurking and more frequent posting now that I’ve created a profile.

I, for one, [CENSORED] the new moderators. Light comment moderation will [CENSORED] the [CENSORED] and help [CENSORED].

As a strong believer in free speech, the [CENSORED] of [CENSORED], subject to limited [CENSORED], will make [CENSORED] a better place.

On the subject of cars, I chose one of the last W-Body 3.6L Impalas for a [CENSORED] work-related trip over a Fusion with a few underbody panels hanging down in [CENSORED’s] airport rental lot. I was reminded of [CENSORED’s] piece on the W-Body vs Cruze. The [CENSORED] Impala’s [CENSORED] engine and [CENSORED] ride made up for the [CENSORED]-era [CENSORED]. The [CENSORED] styling let me cruise the 400 miles to my destination at a [CENSORED] pace without [CENSORED] unwarranted [CENSORED].
